My Favorite February Resources
My favorite February resources for 1st grade are here! February is such a fun month to teach for first and second-grade teachers, but it can also be overwhelming! How much Valentine’s Day to I include? Don’t forget about President’s Day and Groundhog Day and all the things. So, I’m going to share some of my favorite resources in my Teachers Pay Teacher store for you to look at if you are interested in something new! Check out my favorite February resources for 1st grade below!
February Writing Station
The February Writing Station is my top favorite because my writing stations are actually my favorite in my store. The February Writing Station includes seasonal topics such as Groundhog Day, Super Bowl, Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, Winter Games, President’s Day, compassion, and kindness. The writing skills include opinion writing, book reviews, informational writing, narrative writing, notecards, lists, how-to writing, and creative writing. I use the writing station during my guided reading time for a center. It gave my students the opportunity to write every day, whereas they may not get writing instruction every day. This was a favorite center among my first graders.
Valentine’s Day Color By Code
I have always been a big fan of color by code sheets since I was in elementary school. When I first began teaching, I honestly didn’t like them. I thought my kids were just coloring what they thought it was supposed to be and not paying attention to the skill in each little part of the picture. It wasn’t until I created my own color by code sheets that I realized my students were actually practicing skills. I watched them think through each part. Plus, kids need to color. They need this fine motor practice every day. The Valentine’s Day skills include short vowels, long vowels, blends, vowel teams, r-vowels, ten frames, base ten blocks, addition within 10, subtraction within 10, addition within 20, and subtraction within 20. Find it here.
Winter Main Idea Passages
This is typically the time I am hitting the main idea hard in my classroom. The winter main idea passages include topics for all of winter, which includes February topics. I like using these passages because they’re short, kid-friendly, and are fiction and non-fiction. The comprehension piece is short answers and multiple choice. Find it here.
Suffix Reading Passages
Suffixes are usually a big topic beginning in February (or March). I like my students to see phonics skills in context, which is why I created the suffix reading passages. There are two versions of each story- one where students fill in the word with a suffix added and one where students write in the base word. I think it’s important to practice both, which is why I included two versions. Find it here.
February Word Work
Another favorite February resource is this word work center. I have one for every month, but February themes are so much fun! This word work is fun because students have fun and engaging ways to practice phonics skills and sight words. Find it here.
