Winter is upon us! I don’t know about you, but I love to bring out all the fun winter picture books for read-alouds for my students to listen to and enjoy. Here are my favorite winter picture books for first graders!
The Snow Globe Family
Did you ever imagine what it would be like to live inside a snow globe? This family keeps wondering when it’s going to snow. Then, Baby shakes the snowglobe and the snowglobe family finally gets snow again too!
Writing Prompts To Use With The Snow Globe Family:
- What would you do if you lived in a snow globe?
- How do you think it would feel to live in a snow globe and get shaken up?
Sneezy The Snowman
This book, Sneezy The Snowman, is one of my favorite winter picture books to read! It’s about a snowman named Sneezy who keeps complaining he’s cold. The kids keep trying to warm him up, and then he melts!
Writing Prompts To Use With Sneezy The Snowman:
- What would you do to make a snowman warmer?
- How would you help Sneezy from sneezing?
There Was A Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow
The old lady is back to swallow some more things. In this book, she swallows some snow, an old pipe, some coal, a hat, and more!
Writing Prompts To Use With There Was A Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow:
- What would you do if you saw a lady swallowing all these things?
- What do you think it would be like to swallow some snow?
Snowmen At Night
Have you ever wondered what snowmen do at night?! Do you think they just stay still all night long? This book is definitely a favorite for kids (and of my own!) and leads to many great writing prompts!
Writing Prompts For Snowmen At Night:
- Pretend you were a snowman who came to life at night. What would you do?
- Describe your perfect snowman.
So Much Snow
In this mostly wordless book, it snowed all night! It snowed so much that the kids can’t even get out with a shovel! Your students will love the pops of color and finding out what the two kids did in the snow!
Writing Prompts For So Much Snow:
- If you were stuck like these kids were, what would you do to get out of the snow?
- What is your ideal snow day?
Winter Is Here
Winter Is Here is a fun, engaging read-aloud that is perfect for the beginning of the winter season! It’s time for animals to burrow and for children to prepare for all the winter activities.
Writing Prompts For Winter Is Here:
- Describe your perfect winter day.
- Imagine you were an animal in the winter, which one would you want to be and why?
The Giving Snowman: A Children’s Bedtime Story about Gratitude
This book is a beautiful book about gratitude and kindness. Snowman helps out Bird, Rabbit, Farmer, and Traveler on a cold, snowy night. The next day when Snowman is melting, they work together to rebuild Snowman.
Writing Prompts For The Giving Snowman:
- What are some ways you have been helpful to someone?
- How would you help rebuild Snowman?
How To Catch A Snowman
Just like the title says, this book is all about catching a snowman! The snowman the kids built for the snowman contest came to life and ran away!
Writing Prompts For How To Catch A Snowman:
- What would you do to catch your snowman?
- Imagine you were the snowman in this story. How would you get away?
Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate?: How Animals Keep Warm
This is a great non-fiction book to add to your winter picture books collection. Use it for teaching kids what animals do in the winter to survive. It teaches children how animals adapt in the winter.
Writing Prompts For Do Frogs Drink Hot Chocolate:
- If you were an animal, how would you stay warm in the winter?
- If you could be any animal, which would you be and why?
- Pick one of the animals in the story and describe how they stay warm in the winter.

I love all the books Cynthia Rylant writes and this one is no different. This is a sweet story about a girl and her friend and grandma and what they do to enjoy the snow.

- Write your favorite winter memory you had with family or friends.
