Missing Tooth Grins

A Smile For Every Lesson Plan

3 Freebies For Teaching Non-Fiction Text Features

Teaching non-fiction text features can be tricky, but this is a reading unit that students love! Non-fiction texts are different from what they are used to. The formatting and text features are different than the fiction picture books they are familiar with.

Keep reading to snag 3 free resources to use with your non-fiction text feature reading unit!

Add the magnifying glasses and become detectives! This simple reference sheet is a great way to add in some extra flair to your non-fiction reading unit. Students will get the reference sheet and look through their non-fiction texts to find the text features. They will check them off as they find them.

Non-Fiction and Fiction Sort With Scholastic Catalogs

When I was teaching, I always received so many different Scholastic catalogs each month. I only sent home the same two a month, so I wondered what to do with the extra ones. This was a perfect option for recycling those extra catalogs. Each student gets a catalog and cuts out different book covers. They then glue the fiction texts under the fiction column and the non-fiction texts under the other column.

No Scholastic catalogs laying around? No problem! Here’s a quick tutorial on how to get texts for your students to use.

Open up your browser and type in a book title. For this example, I’ll type in “Who Would Win? Polar Bear Vs. Grizzly Bear”. Copy one of the images and paste it into a PowerPoint file. Repeat once you have enough fiction and non-fiction texts (I would say at least 5 of each). Then, print one for every student!

Non-Fiction Text Features Bingo

I love adding bingo to different content areas. Print enough bingo boards for your class. Call out a text feature and students will mark it. This is a fun way to review text features after learning them all!
