Children’s Books For Point Of View
This list of books for teaching point of view will help your students understand who is telling the story and about different narrators. Teaching point of view is important for our students so that they can identify who is telling the story. This will help them as they progress through school and more of their books are different narrators. Teaching them early to distinguish who is telling the story will help them through their reading journey. Here’s a list of 8 picture books for teaching point of view to help your students identify who is telling the story.
Any of these books can be used with our Point Of View Reading Unit! Click here to plan your entire unit with lesson plans, graphic organizers, assessments, reading passages, and more!
Books For Teaching Point Of View
Seriously, Cinderella Is So Annoying
I love these fractured fairy tales for teaching point of view. There are others, like Baby Bear tells the story of Goldilocks and the dwarves tell the story of Snow White. They are all told from a different character’s point of view.
Memoirs Of A Hamster
These memoir picture books are some of my favorites too. It’s fun to read from the point of view of these characters. In Memoirs Of A Hamster, we learn what the hamster is thinking and feeling through his words. It’s a fun read that all children (and adults!) enjoy. There are others such as Memoirs Of A Tortoise and Memoirs Of A Goldfish.
The Couch Potato
Here’s another series of books I enjoy for teaching point of view. Specifically, I love The Couch Potato because screens seem to be such a huge part of our day-to-day lives. We go through the feelings and thoughts the couch potato has when the electricity goes out! What will he do without his screens?!
The Day The Crayons Quit
This popular book is told from the point of view of the crayons in the crayon box! They all share their thoughts and feelings through letters to the owner of their box of crayons. The black crayon wants to be used for more than outlining and the blue crayon wants a break from coloring bodies of water. This is such a fun read!
Ralph Tells A Story
I love using this story for teaching writing, but it works great for point of view as well! Ralph never knows what to write so in this book, we go through his thoughts with him as he figures out his story.
The Pigeon Has To Go To School
Any of the pigeon books by Mo Willems will work for point of view, but this text is one of my favorites! Pigeon is trying to convince you, the reader, to not make him go to school. He has so many reasons to try to convince you, like he knows too much and the teacher won’t like him.
School’s First Day Of School
Have you ever thought about how a school feels on the first day of school? The children are nervous, but so is the school! This is one of my favorites for teaching point of view. It’s a fun way to think about the first day of school! You could use it on the first day of school too!
Voices In The Park
Voices In The Park is from the point of view of four different characters who are in the park. This is a great book for showing different points of view within one book.
I hope you enjoy this list of books for teaching point of view to your first and second grade students. Comment below with which one is your favorite!
