A First Day Of School Activity
It’s back to school season which means pretty soon you will receive your class list and will have a whole new group of students whose names you will learn. Sometimes this can be tricky, especially on the first day of school when your brain has approximately 10,983 tabs open. So, if you are someone who uses back to school name tags, I have an alternative for you today! Instead of name tags, make your students kings and queens and give them crowns!
Why Use Crowns?
First off, crowns are always going to be more fun than name tags. These crowns are also bigger than name tags so you will be able to see them easier. Students create these whereas they might not create their name tag if you are using the sticker kind. So, students take more ownership in their name crowns and get to be creative.
Fine Motor Practice
One thing students always need more practice with is fine motor practice. I feel that students do not get enough opportunities to cut and glue. By giving your students time to draw, color, write on, and cut their name crown, they are getting that additional fine motor practice to warm them up for the school year. Students may not have cut all summer long and so therefore, they can start the year off with some cutting practice.
Assess Without Assessing
You can sneak in assessment on the first day of school. This is not formal assessment- it’s the sneaky assessment. Make sure to watch your students and make note of how they write their names, if they know how to spell their last names, if they write their numbers correctly, how they color, how they cut on the lines, etc. Can they count the letters in their name? Do they know the vowels in their name? Seeing all of these different skills on the first day of school will help you determine where you will go from here.
Easy To Prep!
The greatest part of these name crowns is that they are super easy to prep for the first day of school. You type your class list into the document and it will auto fill all the names onto the crowns for you. Then, you just print and hand out!
